Great fun, but don't believe everything you read...

This book has been around for a while, and has lots of wonderful things in it. It does not, however, always represent the highest standards of scholarship. After all, how could it? He's discussing dozens of tunes and one can't be on top of all of them equally. This doesn't mean anything if you're reading for entertainment, but just don't believe everything you read. The entry on "Happy Birthday," for example relies on third hand testimony (referenced in the footnotes as if that made it authoritative) and unfortunately, the effect is to impugn Mildred Hill, composer of the original version, titled "Good Morning to All" by implying that she took it from earlier themes. Most weird is that the author mentions the tune Bishopsthorpe by Clarke, implying that it's opening measures are the basis for "Happy Birthday's" final four bars. Not only are there significant differences between the two, to confuse the four four bars of a hymn tune in 4/4 with the last bars of another song in 3/4 with any implication that they are related is just wrong.

In many ways Mr. Fuld has done a great thing with this book, and has pulled together lots of different kinds of work. But when suggesting that people have based their work on the work of others, as is clearly done in the "Happy Birthday" piece, one must really do the legwork oneself and look at all the antecedants first hand. The author has not done this, so each article should not be considered an end in itself--actually articles should never be--but really the beginning of digging.

This is a scholarly book in a user-friendly disguise. If you've ever wondered about the origin of a song or some other music, rely on this book to give you the straight dope. So the Ingalls family sang "Jingle Bells" on an episode of "Little House on the Prairie?" Had it been written yet? This book will tell you.

Fuld: Master of Music

Interesting, clear and in-depth - a truly terrific and handy book. The author, over his lifetime, assembled multiple and varying actual examples of the works listed, at each stage of their development, and created timelines for their progression, making the leap from collector to historian. It is from Fuld's physical safeguarding of centuries old musical ephemera that we have such original examples today - and it is from Fuld's fine mind that we have each song's musical and lyrical origin, and combination, and progression through time. Fuld is the founder of popular music as an academic field and as a collectible field.

Great advanced stats references, especially for the very reasonable prices

For the price, these books are great. This book covered both theory and practice in depth, from a social science point of view - not necessarily what a math major might want, though. SPSS, SAS and Stata - detailed worked out examples of analyses. Residual analysis, outlier analysis, various different nuances of multiple regression, multcollinearity measures...very thorough, for under ten bucks (under five when I bought my copy, if I recall correctly.

I purchased this book to help clarify some concepts I am learning in a graduate level course. Excellent job explaining these in another way to help cement the learning. I would highly recommend. Only downside is the publisher's website says we should be able to copy and paste passages from the kindle and that does not work.

For this reason, a more apt title would have been Mathematical foundations to computer security. The book contains 18 detailed chapters, and can be used independently by engineers, scientists, and researchers, or by students in introductory courses to cryptography, electronic commerce, advanced cryptography, and computer and network security. The book is very comprehensive, with the first two chapters dealing with general mathematical principles needed for understanding cryptography, such as modular arithmetic, complexity of algorithms, and so on. The next two chapters delve into a myriad of details of private key and public key cryptosystems. The chapter on the data encryption standard (DES) class of algorithms explains this subject in depth. Other modern private key cryptosystems like RC6 and Rijndael are addressed, and cryptanalysis of the algorithms is offered.

On the public key front, RSA cryptosystems are addressed, as well as Merkle-Hellman, McEliece, elliptic cryptosystems, and several others. The popular MD family of hash functions is mathematically dealt with in a separate chapter. Digital signatures, authentication, secret sharing, and group-oriented cryptography are all described in separate chapters as well.

Key establishment protocols and key agreement protocols are clearly explained, including the popular kerberos. Computer and network security pertaining to computer systems are explained in depth in the last five chapters. The mathematical concepts of electronic elections, digital money, database protection, security, and access control are illustrated in detail, and Internet protocol security (IPSec) is described in detail, as is the secure sockets layer (SSL) scheme.

Throughout the book, where necessary, theorems, lemmas, and proofs are given. The problems and exercises at the end of each chapter are very stimulating. The extensive bibliography (containing over 500 items) is sure to satisfy anyone, particularly doctoral candidates in computer security, who want to explore the area further. In summary, the book is an excellent source of mathematical fundamentals of computer security, and can be used to study weaknesses in existing methods, and study the current set of cryptographic algorithms.

They'd kept him from spiraling out of control, accepted him, and before he knew it, the club was his family. Still, he wanted more. Now, maybe he's looking in all the wrong places—especially when he starts looking in Drea's direction.

Drea's always found Monroe to be handsome, kind, and the sort of man any woman would be lucky to have. She just never thought of herself as that woman, but quickly it becomes clear that there's something between them, something more than just lust.

Loyalties will be tested, lies will be told and things will not be what they seem as their worlds collide and unexpected becomes the norm.

Great Read

I love this whole series . Each book is better than the last.
I especially love an author who isn't afraid to do the unexpected.
Monroe and Drea's story is ful of ups and downs,but they get their HEA. Bonus- You get to see plenty of the other characters from previos books!

I'm giving this book four stars mainly because the author does a good job of portraying the loneliness and desperation which lead the characters down their chosen paths. Even the city they live in seems to be a living, breathing character in this book as it too is trying to find it's way back to more profitable times. As far as Monroe and Drea as a couple goes, I thought they were alright but I didn't feel like their story was particularly romantic. It was more like two lonely people spending time together so they wouldn't be as lonley. Still, I rooted for them to be together at the end. As I've said with the previous books in this series, I feel like the members of Nightshade should have been able to figure out some of the things going on long before they did. Seems they all have gut feelings about things but none of them ever follow up on those feelings! I do like that not everything gets wrapped up by the end of each book. There are still some questions left unanswered so that you know there has to be another book in the series. I know most people hate that but I like having that anticipation for the next book to find the answers..

Narcolepsy Doctor needed!

Read all the books in the Nightshade series, have some issue with the books but i've read them none the less and enjoyed them. I've waited for Monroe's story wanted so much to get into his life, past books left me wanting more Monroe! loved him. Then we finally get his story and it was so disappointing and boring! nothing exciting happens. Drea has narcolepsy I kid you not the women slept in every chapter! That's how she copes with stress, through the whole book she's napping, about to take a nap,thinking about a nap, talking about how she should take a nap. Monroe takes her on a weekend trip not five mintues at the cabin they start to argue and you guessed it the girl gets stress and needs a nap. What she really needed was a doctor to deal with the issue, Drea was a little badass in the last book she killed her father and brother. I have no idea who this sleeping woman is in the story and Monroe just helped with napping. Not the hero I wanted to read about.

You really do need a textbook for psychiatry and this one works for me. It is comprehensive as a textbook should be but not so voluminous or stuffed with rarefied detail so as to overwhelm (unlike some other textbooks). This is an excellent book which targets its audience...It really seems to have been written with the trainee in mind.

The Art of LV

This is a ginormous book chronicling all of the wonderful collaborations LV has done with artists and photographers. It's large format, full color, beautiful paper and an impressive collection. Whether you are a collector or just a fan this book provides plenty of reference material and inspiration. From Takashi Murakami to Stephen Sprouse to Richard Prince and many, many others this showcases all of the wonderful designs that have come from these artistic mashups. It's all here and looks fabulous. For fans of the artists and for LV lovers this is a visual treat and highly recommended.

Diverse & colorful insights into the LV world

For those that are curious, this is the same book as the Exclusive Edition one available in LV boutiques and the online store for $130. The only difference is the cover art work, 5 multiple colored tassels for bookmarking, and the plastic slipcase found on the Exclusive Edition. Otherwise, the content of the book is exactly the same.

I was debating between purchasing this book and the Louis Vuitton: The Birth of Modern Luxury. After browsing through both books at my local LV boutique, I realized that they are actually quite different and intended for different audience. For me, I was immediately drawn to the art works and worldwide architecture designs and photos in the Art, Fashion, and Architecture book and how they relate to the overall image and designs of the company's products. Numerous color photos of great past and current LV ads as well as display window pictures are another attraction that drew me to purchase this book. Basically, I think of the The Birth of Modern Luxury as a "library, archival, historical" type of book while the Art, Fashion, and Architecture as the actual "modern, fashionable, and diverse" offering. I believe if you are into beautiful, high quality pictures and less reading, then this should be the choice between the two books.

Personally, I actually prefer this Standard Edition over the Exclusive Edition simply because I don't need the slipcase and find the cover design on the Exclusive Edition a bit too cartoon-like.
This is really one of the nicest coffee table books I've ever purchased both in design and quality. My book arrived in pristine condition and Amazon did a great job packing and shipping. A note regarding the binding issue some other reviewers brought up, the copy at the LV boutique looks like it's been opened and flattened for a prolonged period and although the pages are well attached, they did look like you might be able to tear a page loose if you flip the page too hard or fast. It is however the same with the other large format LV books in the store made by different publishers. I believe this is just the way they make large format books with nice thick glossy papers. As long as you don't press the book open, you will never have to worry about binding issues.

construction a little shoddy

The contents of this book are wonderful, edgy photography, great subject matter.
If you are expecting just fashion, this is not the book for you. It contains storefronts, (hint:architecture in the title), art and just enough fashion to satisfy a woman. The actual book I received is a little shoddy.The binding does not seem strong and it feels the pages may come out with a lot of use. There also was
tearing on the title page next to the spine, this is a new book and I am a liitle
disappointed in the condition.
