Michael Wintle studied at Cambridge and Ghent Universities, and now holds the chair of European History at the University of Amsterdam, where he directs the degree programmes in European Studies. Potential application scenarios for wireless mesh networks include access and backhaul support for cellular networks, home networks, enterprise networks, community networks, and intelligent transport system networks. Development of wireless mesh networking technology has to deal with challenging architecture and protocol design issues, and there is an increasing interest on this technology among the researchers in both academia and industry. There are many on-going research projects in different universities and industrial research labs. Also, many startup companies are building mesh networking platforms based on off-the-shelf wireless access technologies and developing demanding applications and services. This book provides a unified view of the state-of-the-art achievements in the area of wireless mesh networking technology. The contributed articles from the leading experts in this field cover both the theoretical concepts (e.g., information-theoretic analysis) and system-level implementation issues. Eliot Coleman recommended this gem in his book on organic gardening. Having been a successful fiction writer, Bromfield decided it was a silly waste of life and turned his considerable abilities to restoring a run down farm he bought in Ohio. The book is skillfully written in a conversational tone with enough agricultural detail to keep this 10 pm retiree reading past midnight for several nights. With obvious passion for the land he provides a fascinating account of both successes and failures in bringing soil back to life. In the '40s and '50s he was not only decades ahead of his time, but well ahead of most current farming. Even then people came from England, Germany, Italy and Brazil to join the effort and to further their own knowledge. It's a sweet pleasure to sit in the company of kindred spirits long departed.

From My Experience IS from MY experience!

My family owned a summer cabin on Pleasant Hill Lake, near Malabar Farm from 1956 -65. We would tour the Farm every summer. We would also buy lots of produce from the produce stand. Mr Bromfield had died before we found the farm, but he was one of my Mom's heroes. Mom would say she didn't care about the tour of the Big House. She wanted to take the farm tour again and again. Reading this book brought back some of the best memories of my childhood! To this day one of my sisters credits her absolute LOVE for watercress to the "pick your own" cress pond across the street from the produce stand. I remember eating tomatoes so juicy the seeds and juice ran down my chin onto my clothes, the BEST corn ever, ice cold watermelons cooled in the spring fed troughs and, yes, the watercress,

Even thinking about this book brings tears to my eyes. I found the book both touching and entertaining.

Cosmological Theory simplified

Thanks to Dr. Guth for trying to explain the Cosmology, Theory of Inflation in simple terms. Of course it sounds simple, after all there is a whole theory behind it and this book is written in paperback without any single formula. It is a good book for popular scientist, with this book you learn a littel more about the cosmological theories which Inflation is one of them. Due to the difficulty of the subject the teacher had to go into concepts that sound simple judging from the name but extremely diffcult to comprehend.If you know about the subject and most importanatly the tools of the trade, you understand better each sentence otherwise you just get the flare of it. The book is the only as far as I know in this field written at this level as a story and especially by one of the founders of the theory, reminds me the book Hawkigns Universe, simplified very difficult concepts.

A Brilliant Look at Real Science

Some very good books on science focus mainly on detailing a particular scientific discovery or discoveries. Some very good science books do their best to communicate with a general audience concerning ideas that can be highly technical. What is rarer is a science book that does both of these within the framework of what it is really like to live and work as a scientist. The amazing book The Double Helix by James Watson which describes the quest for the structure of DNA is one of these. So is this book by Alan Guth on the development of the inflationary universe theory as a "correction" to Big Bang theory.
In this book Guth takes us through the basics of the Big Bang theory and then into the idea of inflation--what it is and how it goes along with Big Bang theory. He takes a wonderful historically-developed approach and he does this without the help of (at least as far as I can recall) a single equation in the body of the text. Instead, he uses basic numerical analysis and the help of a number of graphs and illustrations to develop these complex ideas into a very readable explanation. He is also very frank in warning the reader of difficult concepts and directing the less detail-minded to skipping around.
All of this makes for a good science read; however, what I really enjoyed about this book is how he brings out the things that really drive real science, particularly when he reaches those investigations into which he was personally involved. He points out how theory and experiment drive each other. He isn't afraid to show the fights for priority and reputation that often push scientists. He lets us see how the desperation for a secure job, the cockiness of the young researcher and the ego of established names is often the engine for discovery.
Anyone interested in the current state of research into the origins of our universe would be remiss in not reading this book. Many people get the gist of Big Bang theory but fewer understand what Big Bang theory is really about and fewer still understand why the inflationary universe has become so important in recent years. This book will clear away all the fog; in particular, Guth is very clear in explaining the problems with Big Bang theory (the horizon problem, magnetic monopoles, etc.) that are cleared-up with the inflation approach.
More than this, however, the reader will gain real insight into what it is like to be a working scientist. It offers a peak at its excitements and disappoints, even a glimpse at the clashes and in-fighting. Many people often get the idea that science makes grand pronouncements of fact from on high. This book shows that science is, in reality, a continuing struggle for a more and more accurate picture of our universe and how it works. It is a view worth seeing.

Ten years later, Guth's survey is still interesting and relevant

During the past decade, a number of books by the likes of Stephen Hawking, Brian Greene, Martin Rees, or Robert Penrose have, with varying success, brought a new generation of lay readers up to speed on new research and conjectures in cosmology, especially on the Big Bang Theory and its ancillary explorations. Even though it was written ten years ago, Alan Guth's "The Inflationary Universe" is still one of the best of the bunch, in terms both of its writing and its information.

Guth, of course, focuses on the theory he was instrumental in formulating: that, in less than a second, a "repulsive gravitational field created by a false vacuum" caused the universe to expand from relatively "nothing" and formed all the matter in the observable cosmos. In other words, the theory offers explanations for several dilemmas that had been perplexing scientists, including how the Bang occurred in the first place, and how it became so unaccountably Big.

If Guth had simply written an up-to-date report summarizing what scientists believed about the Big Bang in 1997, then his book would have fallen by the wayside long ago. Instead, he portrays the wonky disputes and contrasting theories, along with biographical anecdotes showing his own role in the development of "inflationary universe" theory. For Guth and his peers, science isn't filled with "Eureka!" moments; rather, their work is impeded by doubts, by false leads, by mistakes and omissions, and even by job insecurity.

Above all, there is a palpable sense of camaraderie, excitement, and (yes) fun. Towards the end of the book, Guth offers some thoughts on where theoretical physics might be going in future decades, and he examines some of the more speculative solutions to current problems, such as the possible existence of wormholes, or the question of whether the universe has a beginning, or how new universes might be created in a laboratory (a misunderstood subject which has morphed into the urban legend that such experimentation will destroy our own planet).

That's not to say that Guth's survey isn't a challenging read. I imagine his definitions of Higgs fields, quantum tunneling, and false vacuums will perplex the uninitiated; I had to read several sections twice--particularly when the author was trying to describe in English what can only be truly understood in equations. But the effort is worth it. And be sure to read the footnotes; Guth uses them not only to present additional detail but also to recount interesting anecdotes and to share funny asides.

While the author is not shy in touting his own role in these far-flung explorations, neither is he chary of compliments and credit for his colleagues. Steven Weinberg, Andrei Linde, David Wilkinson, So-Young Pi, Robert Dicke, Sheldon Glashow, Jim Peebles, Paul Steinhardt, Michael Turner, Henry Tye--they all get due billing. Their generosity and collegiality gives their vocation a human edge that often seems lacking in scientific accounts.

About the Author

Makoto Shinkai is a Japanese film director, animator, and writer. A native of the Nagano prefecture in Japan, he studied Japanese literature at Chuo University. He traces his passion for creation to the manga, anime, and novels he was exposed to while in middle school. Considered one of the best animators in the world today, he is often called the "next-Miyazaki". Shinkai developed his abilities as a video game designer for FalCom, where he worked on the cult-classic role-playing game Y"S. Shinkai is unique as an animator as he cut his teeth by producing almost all elements many of his works - from animation to music composition to voice acting. This Manga Struck Me Like 'A Clap of Thunder...'

This manga brings one of Makoto Shinkai's latest and most beautful masterpieces into a brand new form. While the character designs may look different from what you may have seen in his film but the designs and illustrations done by Midori Motohashi fit perfect into the manga's own work. One great thing about the manga is how it is able to go more in depth to the film as if the viewer is discovering deleted scenes never before put into the movie. On one note some of the wording and placement might seem a bit off at first even for those who are experience in reading manga, but once you get used to this fresh style of manga writing you are in for a ride. The ending of the story also has cute mini-comic that I liked and thought was a nice touch. I truly enjoyed reading this manga and was able to feel it come to life as I continued to read which made it feel all as much as real to me. This one is truly a title worth being in any manga fan's collection!

Creates a poetic mood of inspiration

A boy in his first year of high school takes shelter on days when it rains in a park gazebo. He sketches shoes and dreams of being a designer of ladies' footwear. His family is moving apart without him, with his mother spending her time with a younger boyfriend and his big brother moving in with his girlfriend.

On those mornings when he goes to the park, he has company -- an older woman playing hooky from work who drinks beer and eats chocolate in the shelter. They strike up a conversation, and he finds himself able to share things with her no one else in his life wants to hear. She seems intrigued by someone who's still got future choices ahead of him, as a way of escaping her own worries.

Either that description intrigues you, or you're thinking, "and? what do they DO?" If the latter better fits you, I don't think this is the story for you, because I found the appeal of The Garden of Words to be in its creation of mood. The events it portrays are necessarily transitory, with its pages capturing life-changing moments bound to end. The two, mismatched as they are, find inspiration in each other temporarily. I found myself thinking about people I'd barely known who still had an influence on my life, about being open to interactions with other people, about how memories become connected to places and moments and elements like the weather.

The one thing that occasionally marred my entering into the poetic dream was the lettering. It's computerized, and there are times when the words don't fit the original balloons, bumping up against the edges or parsed into breaks that don't match English phrasing. It doesn't aim for elegance the same way the other elements of the book do.

The Garden of Words is a lovely stand-alone story that I suspect one can come to at different times in one's life and find different sympathies and resonances. It's a good read whether or not you've seen the anime. (Review originally posted at ComicsWorthReading.com.)

I really liked this manga, this story is simple and short, but I really recommend watching the anime first before reading, the music and animation make you care about the characters, and the manga really brings back the emotion you feel upon first viewing, and made the reading better in my opinion.

For those interested in Beckett, Abbott's study is of little use. For those interested in Beckett Studies, it is perhaps essential.
The only problem is this: Beckett Studies has little to do with Beckett--with understanding Beckett. Instead, it is wrapped in its own terminology, abstracted from the texts it attempts to uncover. Abbott's only real contribution to our understanding of Beckett's WORK is the idea of "oevure". However, one need not read Abbott in order to see in Beckett's prose an ongoing process of self-discovery. One need only read Beckett.
For the most part, Abbott's work is unimportant, obscured mostly by the critical arena into which it speaks.

We are fortunate to have Nick in our midst - and writing ...

Although one might venture to say that a lot has been written about MIB's ... in book form - I'm here to tell you, reader, that if you haven't read Nick Redfern - you don't know very much about Men In Black. The man does his research, and has that rare ability to relay said research onto paper in such fashion as to raise the hackles of even veterans of the phenomenon, and for those who may be new, you're in for the read of your life if this subject matter interests you - as it probably does if you're reading this review. I will only state further, that if this is your first taste of Redfern - then ALL of his books are a MUST READ ... everyone of them. 5 HUGE Stars - the guy doesn't let up. Read it, absorb it, and watch your back! Then decide if your world view hasn't derailed once you've read his work(s)!! We are fortunate to have Nick in our midst - and writing for us!

THIS BOOK SCARED ME

This book scared the bejeezus out of me. I had not only never fully understood the Men in Black phenom and was further introduced to the Black-Eyed Children and the Grinning Cowboy. I suddenly understood a bunch of characters I had seen in David Lynch movies. As Redfern suggests, Men in Black love to play on phones and I experienced their interference shortly after reading the book. I am a complete believer that these entities are about and I have no idea what they want. Seems no one else does either. Fascinating stuff.

An Odd Mix...

Not as much high strangeness as Nick's last MIB outing, but makes for a good read. Some of the personal stories were very much "out there", sounding more like full-blown psychosis rather than a normal person's encounter with the bizarre. A bit of trimming would have made this a 5-star effort, but no worries, one can never get enough of Mr. Redfern.
