About the Author

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, a gifted writer, scholar, sociologist, historian, and activist, became the first African-American to receive a PhD from Harvard University in 1895. An exponent of full equality for African- Americans, Du Bois was a cofounder of the Niagara Movement, which became the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909. A leading voice of the black community, Dr. Du Bois' teachings, writings, and lectures provided a platform for his views that prompted action and change. Until his death in 1963, W.E.B. Du Bois led a passionate life of ceaseless energy and purposeful writing.

BELOVED, LISTEN TO CONSCIENTIOUS VOICES.

Fondly called W.E.B., Dr William Edward Burghardt DuBois was a conscientious voice, whose mouthpiece was just a pen. Each of his writings buttressed this point.
A bundle of intellect, all his works have remained potent till this day. Having enumerated the problems and experiences of emancipated slaves in "The Souls of Black Folk", Dr DuBois used this book, "Darkwater: Voices from Within the Veil", to highlight the intricacies of the then White-Black relationships. This book has a socio-economic focus, and dealt with such associational issues like exploitative labour, voting rights, women's rights, and family values. It suggested guidance and remedies wherever necessary. The ideas and insights of Dr DuBois were general in perspective: both Whites and Blacks were thought of.
This book is more than eighty years old; however, anybody who reads it, needs only to turn a few pages before discovering that we are still grappling with most of its lamentations.
Finally, I must say that I cherished reading this book. "Darkwater: Voices from Within the Veil" is a compelling piece; especially for anyone who is familiar with either "The Souls of Black Folk" or "Dusk of Dawn".

Powerhouse Book from the Greatest

If you don't know, Dr. Du Bois is the greatest social scientist of all time. In this book, Du Bois emerges as a fearless truthteller while remaining erudite in his observations. Du Bois is also simultaneously a poet, as several of his poems are embedded in this work. Much of his cogent analysis remains highly relevant and proves even to be prophetic.

One of the highlights of this book is that Dr. Du Bois writes the companion essay to The Souls of Black Folk. There is an essay in here called The Souls of White Folk. It is an absolutely devastating analysis of Eurocentric culture and worldview. He connects the development of whiteness in social relations to race riots and the world war. He readily admits the faults of people of color worldwide, but speaks to the arrogance and superiority embedded in European imperialism. It is because of this essay that you can really begin to understand the depths of human depravity and greed which led to both world wars and wars in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

The other highlight of this book is how clearly Dr. Du Bois speaks as a liberation theologian. I don't want to spoil the surprise, but his rendering of Jesus Christ is genius and touching. Parts of this book are the reason another scholar (Edward Blum) wrote a book about Dr. Du Bois referring to him as an American Prophet. He is prophetic in theology, racial justice, gender justice, education and in his expansive vision for labor, love, and beauty.

lifting the veil

a veritable mixed bag -- polemic, social science, poems, a biographical sketch of coleridge-taylor, a black composer, nature writing, autobiography, and a surprisingly good short story which may well had inspired the film `the world, the flesh, and the devil' starring harry belafonte.

activist and social scientist, dubois wrote in this collection, published in 1920, of the industrial society of the north after the defeat of the agrarian society of the south and of the black men and women who migrated north for jobs and their mistreatment -- one incident was the terrorist attacks by white mobs on the black citizens of east st louis, which became known as the east st louis riots. dubois arguments extend beyond the rights of the black worker to the rights of the black soldier. during the first world war, dubois was successful in getting a reluctant government to train black soldiers as officers at fort des moines.

dubois' rhetorical style is purple, alternately bruising and floral. certainly his love of the united states shines through as his scenic descriptions compete with the lyrics of our national anthem. not the easiest reading, but if you can get through emerson, dubois should not be a problem.

Excellent How To

This is a very detailed, how to guide regarding double bevel marquetry. The author describes the necessary materials and equipment in detail. He then performs two projects. Each project is described in extensive detail. When the reader has finished both of these projects, the readers will be confident enough to try some extensive marquetry--maybe not Silas Kopf stuff but the reader will clearly be ready for lots of projects.

I purchased "Woodworker's Guide to Veneering & Inlay", "Marquetry Course" and "The Fine Art of Marquetry: Creating Images in Wood Using Sawn Veneers" together at the same time. All three are quite beautiful in terms of photography and packed with very useful, detailed knowledge. I started out reading "Woodworker's Guide to Veneering & Inlay" first. It contains a great deal of information about the creation of veneer and inlay materials. This was an excellent lead in to the "Marquetry Course". This book discusses a number of projects in increasing complexity. I then read "The Fine Art of Marquetry: Creating Images in Wood Using Sawn Veneers". I found this book to be quite detailed both in direction and step-by-step photographs. If you cannot create the basic project as outlined in this book you should not blame the book. Taking nothing away from the other two books, if you can only purchase one, I would start with "The Fine Art of Marquetry: Creating Images in Wood Using Sawn Veneers". But I highly recommend all three!

A great way to start

I am new to Marquetry but needed to create a small flower as an inlay on a small table. A couple of years ago I had taken a course in hand sawn veneer from Craig and had watched him make a small leaf using marquetry. That small leaf is featured in the first part of the book while making the lotus flower shown on the book cover is described in detail in the last half. It took me a couple of tries to make an acceptable lotus flower but I now feel quite comfortable with the process. The book provides a ton of illustrated detail, walking you through every step of cutting and shading every piece. I also own a couple of videos on marquetry and the book is a much more useful learning aid.

Were you in on helping Claire decide what cover to go with? I love the way she keeps you involved in what she's doing. It's more personal that way. And then Ms. Thompson sent out a few teasers to whet your appetite for her lovelies and their story and you found yourself chanting, hurry hurry hurry! You almost wan ...more I just have to ask...Were you one of the readers who found out Claire was writing a new BDSM M/M romance and sat on the edge of your seat just waiting in anticipation for the release? I saw this news and I hollered out my happy thoughts and I shouted louder than the hubby did during a football play he was happy about.

While I am a very big fan of Claire's and have read a lot of her works, as a reviewer I have to be honest for our sake right? I will not play favorites as a reviewer. I give you my straightforward thoughts and allow you to go with it. So here we go...

Page one caught me and this story held me tight until I reached the end and when I got there, I wanted more. The opening scene we have a cowboy on stage showing off his fire whip demonstration. As mesmerizing as that probably is, the lead character of this story, Tyler Sutton a magazine reporter, has his mind on something else, or should I say someone else entirely. The object of his attention? Clint Darrow and he's the foreman of a cattle farm and a cowboy poet to boot! Clint had been on stage right before the fire whip demonstration and Tyler was lost in Clint's poems, especially because as we all know, poems can mean more than one thing and each person will decipher the meaning differently right? Well, Tyler sure did.

Tyler is a cowboy at heart his roots and his heart lay in Texas with his family and the farm they own. However, something drove Tyler away from all he loved to the big city of Austin. A place where he knew no one, and no one knew him and his dirty secrets. He started over by becoming a line editor for a magazine and eventually working his way up to a reporter. This is when we meet the young man. After just three months on the job he is promoted to reporter and is sent to cover the cowboy poetry and music festival taking place. He's both thrilled and let down at the idea of his first story. He expected nothing more than corny recitations by has-been or would-be cowboys and the same tired old country music standards offered in a nasal twang. Still, it was an opportunity to get his own byline and he had jumped at the chance to prove himself.

What he didn't expect to see was what he saw. And the man who caught his attention, Clint Darrow who is a Dom on a stick. This man had Tyler's whole body at attention and Tyler had to interview him. When Clint, a real cowboy with that southern hospitality, began talking, Tyler lost thought. So did I. They had a few beers and talked for a bit and Tyler did ask a few questions but then Clint turned things around and asked Tyler what he thought the poem he recited on stage meant. Tyler connected it with Dominance and submission, between a horse and master actually. This was the green light Clint needed. Shy? Nope, not Clint. He knows what he wants and he goes after it, and he wants Tyler. He sees something in Tyler that Tyler can't see. This is what most of the story is based on. That and getting the younger man to grasp his submissive side and be okay with wanting more than just a gentle romp in the hay.

Clint is a thirty-nine year old cowboy who knows who he is, and he knows what he wants. One night spent with the younger cowboy and he knew he had to have Tyler. Clint is a foreman at a ranch and has been for many years. He's good at what he does and he's respected for it, and his sexual orientation isn't a big deal to those he works with. He's done playing games and hopes to find that perfect guy to spend the rest of his life with. He's a Dom and he delivers exactly what Tyler needs. We find this out the first night they are together. It's a remarkable scene actually. Soon enough those men find themselves in the middle of a mystery. This gives them a reason to spend more than one night together. (YAY for us!) Someone is stealing containers of bull sperm off the farms in Texas and Clint and Tyler are set out to find the culprit. They do make one hell of a team both in and out of the bed.

Claire wrote an amazing ménage scene in this story, and may I just say that she handles it with so much care that I didn't find myself jealous for any of the characters at any given point. There is just one ménage scene so if it isn't your thing, just give it a chance. You won't be sorry.

This is about a man's quest to identify with who he really is and what he really wants and not be ashamed. Tyler is a man running from his past, himself, and from love all because he thinks something is sick wrong with him.

The focal point in many BDSM stories works on the humiliation of the slave/sub. In The Cowboy Poet you'll find that the characters have equal amounts of power within their relationship and it's a journey of love from the master to his sub and the sub to his master. This is a very strong plot driven story, the characters are amazing and so real that I'm pretty sure Ty and Clint live some place in Texas tending to their own herds of cattle and horses as partners.. The BDSM is handled with class and care and none of it is eye closing, OMG'ing, or anything of the sort. We even see a bit of C & BT going on.

Claire is class, and so are her characters. The hot Master/sub sex? Get a fan you'll need it. I love those alpha men! Clint is all alpha and when he gets in the mode? Oh my... I will say this: I was at work, on a break and reading one of the hot sex scenes and someone asked me if I was okay? I looked flushed. LOL! You bet I was!

Sexy Cowboys with BDSM Twist

Another hot story from the Mistress of m/m BDSM. I love the two guys in this, Clint with his heart of gold and the quiet, gruff exterior, and Tyler, so deliciously confused and aching for what he knows he shouldn't have...Hot sexy Texas cowboys, smokin' BDSM scenes, and the characters are beautifully realized and ring so true. Loved it!

Handled With Care

There is a difference between Claire Thompson and most of the other authors in this genre. She takes the time to create a history for her characters. We have a fuller view of them in general compared to others. Yes there is ample sex but there is enough story that it is not monotonous. This is a story that is based in having faith in yourself and accepting who you are. Well done Thompson!

Good book, for my class

A lot of good information in this book. I thought I knew a lot about Operating Systems going into the class that I used this book in Fall/2013 semester. I was wrong. With this book and a great instructor I was able to learn so much.

I am sure there is a new edition coming out soon, at least I hope so, the author presents the material straight forward. A lot of nice exercises in the chapters to help you grasp the information. Some pretty great history in the book about how all of this started that I found most interesting.

This book does not cover Windows 8-8.1 to let you know, that is why I am sure there is another edition in the making, I hope so if the author is willing to put in the effort they deserve the work for another edition in my opinion.

Mainly covers Windows OS, has small chapter on MAC OS, and a decent chapter on Linux Ubuntu OS. I would of liked to of seen more of Linux, but our school has a class designated for Linux OS.

What the book did do is open me up to Linux possibilities that I never considered, well the instructor was very detailed about Linux as well. I am not sure if much of my future builds will have anymore Microsoft products on it.

I will stop right here, Great book, if you are buying this to learn about Operating systems covers up to Windows 7 so if you are getting it for a great price, nothing really has changed. If you want the most up to date information, check to see if there is another edition coming out. There may be one out already, I have not looked.

Book was brand new, and shipping was fast. Recommended to other class mates. Better than the last edition of this book. Last edition was severly outdated. This edition was definitely written by someone who understands operating systems.

Basic knowledge about micro computer operating systems. Gets more in depth on certain topics, but isn't too heavy with details or tech jargon. All in all, a nice introductory piece on computer related topics.

Excelent resource

I had a copy of this volume I had purchased at the Air Force museum twenty years ago, but lost it in a house fire. I use the drawings extensively for carving models out of wood. Highly recommend

About the Author
David J. Soler has been called to enrich lives and catalyze success. He is a Christian, firefighter, author, podcaster, sought-after speaker, entrepreneur, and the founder/publisher of Firefighter Toolbox, which is on a mission to build better firefighters and leaders in the fire service. He is the host of iTunes top-rated firefighter training podcast called Firefighter Toolbox Podcast. (He has interviewed legends of the fire service like: Chief Brunacini, FDIC Chief Halton, Chief Rubin, NFA Administrator Dr. Oneial, Army Chief of Fire Training Robert Simmons, Deputy Chief and Author Frank Viscuso and so many more.) A must have for your toolbox.

Wow, what a book!

I sat down to read The Firefighter Preplan with my highlighters and pen; however, after reading the intro and first chapter, I couldn't slow myself down. I got through the whole book in two short sittings and have since gone back through half with a fine tooth comb. This book has a perfect mix of motivation, guidance and applicability. True to form, there is no fluff, David brings to the table a refreshing dose of frankness without being overly brief. The action plans at the end of each chapter are smart and to the point and the plan in the back can serve as a model throughout any ones career when setting goals. I'm relatively young in my FD career (6years) and I see myself referring to this Preplan over and over for motivation and guidance to set myself on task and continue working toward becoming a respectable firefighter. Do yourself a favor, get this book and share it with others so we can leave the fire service better than we found it.

Academy teaches you the basics, FF Preplan teaches you what to live by.

A great book that is hard to put down once you open it. Easy read, short, and to the point with "action plans" at the end of each chapter to help you stay on track and get results. They are also a great tool to model throughout your career, for setting goals. Great enhancement for mentoring programs; or those who don't have a program established can piggy back off of this book to help develop one as it serves as a great auxiliary.

FF Preplan has roughly 32 chapters (so almost a chapter a day to maintain, once completed) and another way to recharge your batteries, get fired up, and motivated to be that best firefighter you know and want to be; while making the good advances and steps to help out and bring as many as you can with you to get up... be driven... and make something of yourself, for the better.

I would challenge you to pick up a copy and join me, and many others, through this book. Take tips and words of encouragement from those who have gone before and have knowledge and information to share to those who want to follow and be the best they can be.

Great book, happy I came across it.

One of the best books you can buy regarding the fire service and life. I listen to all the podcast and I took the chance in buying this book and I do not regret it. It was something that at this point in my career I needed. Easy read, not like a text book. It's more as if someone is just talking to you at the firehouse dinner table and unloading all their wisdom. Great book! A must for any firefighter.
