This book just flows so well with the other two I love it.
There is no time wasted in these series. The author just jumps you right into the action and story. Taurus is a complex character that goes thru ALOT of changes and experiences. I love how the author makes the characters go thru real life issues. I enjoyed learning a little something about the enemy as well.
Lots of twists and turns. Very well done.

Julie Kemp is a North Carolina native and lives outside of Charlotte. She is a licensed insurance agent and works with her husband at their local insurance agency. She loves to exercise and spend time with her family and dear friends. Through her struggles and long journey with grief, Julie has found peace in helping others in similar circumstances as a grief facilitator at her church. She has been facilitating grief groups since 2008. She walks along with each participant through every step of their grief journey. From a personal perspective…….

I admit - I know the author. I even admit - She is a close friend of mine. Because of those two facts, I wanted to share a few comments from a personal perspective just in case you are sitting on the fence asking yourself if you should read this book.

Well, because of our friendship, I also know Julie's reason for writing this book and sharing her journey. It was not to make money or to create any fame for herself. (She is the first to admit she is not a writer by trade.) Julie feels that if she can help just one person by sharing her own story, her efforts in writing this book will be worth every minute, every tear, every effort. I think she has already surpassed that goal of helping "just one"…..actually she has already helped many who have read or heard about her journey.

I wonder, however…..could there be one more? Could it be you? This story is real and comes straight from the heart…..I highly recommend!

Heartwrenching and very moving

Just an unbelievable story of one person's journey thru a real life nightmare. As my wife an I read this real life story of the loss of a husband and the near loss of a child, we could not hold back the tears. Julie shares touching and gut wrenching details that will make your eyes water. While reading this book will tug at your heart strings, it will also give you comfort and strength. Although I can't fathom what Julie went thru as she was living this nightmare, you will feel her emotions as she pour her heart and thoughts into this book. The most moving book I have read in a long, long time. God bless Julie, Landon, Andy and both of their families.

Faith is truly amazing

What a wonderful book!! You will need a box of Kleenex at times when you read how a family has a great life one second and their whole world changed in another. You can feel her pain, anger, loss & truly understand her questioning faith as she experiences the loss of her life as she knew it. As she states in the book it's her "new norm". You can definetly feel her love & devotion to her son, Landon as she struggles as a single parent. As a Christian myself, I felt the book validated everything I believed it. FAITH truly has it's Reasons! Great book - once you start reading it you can't put it down!!

As noted, this is the Barnhart Dictionary, published by Chambers. The US version of this classic is now priced at over $60 - so this British re-release is a real bargain. One of the best modern etymology references available, clear, concise and definitive. IMHO, its better organized then the Oxford, and more authoritative than all but Pkorny's great $1,000 work on the etymology of all IndoEuropean languages. Highly recommended.

Wonderful reference and great value!

This volume is a "must-have" for readers, scholars, and absolutely any person interested in words and their origins/history. The book is rather heavy and thick but is otherwise extremely user-friendly and a great "browser" as well as an essential companion to any ordinary dictionary.
I should note that this edition, although a British re-publication of its famous US version, retains American spelling and keeps its focus on American sources while utilizing the best of all English references, regardless of country of origin.
Regarding physical quality, the book has a signature-sewn binding, meaning that it is not merely held together by glue but that its pages are actually sewn with real thread... quite a treat in today's disposable society. Thus, with reasonable care, this tome should last a lifetime and beyond!

A welcome start to the 2003 IDS book publishing rush

When was the last time you saw a new book on detecting intrusions at your local book store? Aside from revisions of "Network Intrusion Detection" by Northcutt and Novak, the last thought-provoking book was Paul Proctor's "Practical Intrusion Detection Handbook," published in August 2000. In 2003, IDS fans, the drought has ended.
"Implementing Intrusion Detection Systems" (IIDS) is a welcome start to a year that will see four books published with the word "Snort" in their titles. IIDS pays homage to the finest detection engine in the land, but uses Snort as a sample of the capabilities an IDS has to offer -- capabilities frequently attacked in the press and by assessment-oriented companies. Author Tim Crothers tackles the naysayers head-on in the book's second paragraph: "You see media articles from well-known security writers claiming that IDS is a dead technology. Fortunately, those writers are wrong." Amen!
IIDS is clear and straightforward, with a dose of good advice and informative diagrams. The sample IDS deployment chapter was nice to see in a published work, and the evasion section in chapter 5 was well done. Overall Wiley did a fine job editing IIDS and the price is reasonable.

Now for the toughest part of any review -- constructive criticism of technical details. Crothers' discussion of "passive ftp" on p. 39 doesn't recognize that port 20 is only involved in "active ftp". (See pp. 456-7 of "Building Internet Firewalls, 2nd Ed, for a chart to silence all debate on this topic.) Closed tcp ports reply with RST ACKs, not the lone RSTs listed on p. 96. The author doesn't mention that FIN scans (p. 97) are never used because the lack of a response could be easily due to firewalls dropping packets, not open ports staying quiet.
And, repeating the mistake seen in almost every book mentioning TCP/IP, Crothers' Appendix A claims TCPDump displays "starting and ending relative sequence numbers" (p. 258). Rather, those numbers are the sequence number of the first byte of data in the segment and the sequence number of the first byte of data in the NEXT segment. That's why a TCP segment with 432 bytes of data shows 1:433 in TCPDump -- the first byte is "relative" number 1, the last is relative number 432, and the NEXT is 433.

Apart from my philosophical disagreements with the author's detection methodology and priorities, I enjoyed reading IIDS immensely. I finished it in less than two days and highlighted many lines of text. It will be fun to see how the other four IDS books arriving this year compare to Tim Crothers' work.

Excellent introduction to IDS

Implementing Intrusion Detection Systems by Tim Crothers is an excellent introduction to the topics important to implementing any IDS. Crothers uses Snort as a reference IDS system, but the coverage of Snort is not intended to be comprehensive so if you plan to use Snort you will need an additional resource. Crothers does an excellent job of giving a very basic overview of underlying protocol elements that need to be understood to be a competent IDS manager without going into excessive detail for the generalist. Overall this is an excellent introduction to IDS topics. For someone with IDS experience this book will probably be useful in filling in some holes in your knowledge but Network Intrusion Detection by Nortcut and Novak may be a better book for the experienced IDS implementer.

Read the whole book before judging

I actually had the chance to spend time at a seminar that John Fisher put on at the Humane Society. Before his death, he was working very hard to show owners/trainers how to work with their dogs and not use the standard dominance/punishment method. Unfortuantely a previous reviewer must not have read the whole book. You introduce the discs slowly and you are simply dropping them when you introduce them (from a distance of you knee to the floor, because you sit when introducing these) Later when working distance exercises you may toss them near a dog as a distraction...but nothing more. His video show the steps much better. "Training dogs in the human pack" As he states in the book, to get a better understanding of how the discs work he advises you read his other books, this book does not go into full detail. Overall I enjoyed reading Dogwise. They shaped the dogs behavior with NO aggression or punishment. They made the dog figure things out on his own and in a very short period of time. It's great reading if you want to undersatnd how your dog learns and what you can do to teach them in a positive way.

Training your dog... There's nothin' to it!

Dogwise is an amazingly practical guide to training. It gives an insight to dog psyche and is very easy to follow. Training a dog a command takes no more than fifteen minutes, that's my own personal practical and successful experience. You can also help your dog learn other commands based on the same techniques given here, you'll become innovative. The illustrations are great but the number of photographs should have been more. Whatever dogwise is a book that can turn your dog from scratch to a complete police dog in no more than three months. Take my word for it! I strongly recommend dog lovers to give it a try; they and their dogs will both be happy and better off.

In dire need of a strong editor

Alone, each of the chapters presented within is a fine contribution to the discussion of 5GW; what is missing is a strong editor's hand to cull the frequently repeated points. The discussion of how GMW and xGW models differ is mostly the same each time discussed; it would be nice to have a core chapter on what ground the authors agree, with subsequent chapters discussing the deltas or other areas into which individuals wish to expand.

Furthermore, the Kindle version suffers greatly in the translation. Lists of bullet points are formatted poorly; every graphic appears to have been done without regard to the Kindle's abilities (or lack thereof); font sizes and hinting change without regard to the text; many of the footnotes are poorly formed.
