Five Days That Shocked the World: Eyewitness Accounts from Europe at the End of World War II, by Nicholas Best

In the momentous days from April 28 to May 2, 1945, the world witnessed the death of two Fascist dictators and the fall of Berlin. Mussolini's capture and execution by Italian partisans, the suicide of Adolf Hitler, and the fall of the German capital signaled the end of the four-year war in the European Theater. In Five Days That Shocked the World, Nicholas Best thrills readers with the first-person accounts of those who lived through this dramatic time.

In this valuable work of history, the author's special achievement is weaving together the reports of famous and soon-to-be-famous individuals who experienced the war up close. We follow a young Walter Cronkite as he parachutes into Holland with a Canadian troop; photographer Lee Miller capturing the evidence of Nazi atrocities; the future Pope Benedict returning home and hoping not to get caught and shot after deserting his infantry unit; Audrey Hepburn no longer having to fear conscription into a Wehrmacht brothel; and even an SS doctor's descriptions of a decadent sex orgy in Hitler's bunker.

In skillfully synthesizing these personal narratives, Best creates a compelling chronicle of the five earth-shaking days when Fascism lost it death grip on Europe. With this vivid and fast-paced narrative, the author reaffirms his reputation as an expert on the final days of great wars.

From Booklist
Best has already written an account of WWI’s finale (The Greatest Day in History, 2008). For this WWII complement, he steers clear of scholarly treatments like Martin Gilbert’s The Day the War Ended (1995), shrewdly emphasizing a quality of proven popularity—fame. Characters who became celebrities in subsequent years but were ordinary civilians, soldiers, or refugees in the days Best’s narrative spans (April 28–May 2, 1945) permeate his structuring stories of the demises of Hitler and Mussolini. Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, Günter Grass, Joseph Heller, Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI), and Henry Kissinger are names Best drops among those of notorious Germans escaping from Berlin or surrendering in Italy. Parallel to tracking Nazis trying to save their skins, Best recounts the liberation of infamous sites of their crimes, such as Belsen and Dachau, and culminates with Berlin’s fall to the Red Army as recalled by survivors of Hitler’s entourage. Accenting personal experiences of the famous-to-be, Best draws the audience interested in WWII’s apocalyptic climax. --Gilbert Taylor

Apocalypse Then
By William Holmes
"Five Days That Shocked the World" is something of a sequel to Nicholas Best's excellent The Greatest Day in History. His first book chronicled the catastrophic final week of World War I, and this new work performs the same service for the end of World War II in Europe. Both books use the same technique: the author weaves together a series of individual experiences to create an impressionistic yet personal description of the confusing, deadly end of a war. It must have seemed like the end of the world to those caught up in those frenzied days in Italy and Germany.

Best maintains the suspense, even for some famous people who obviously survived the war, obscuring identities when he first introduces those involved and then carrying the participants to the edge of the cliff before moving on to another vignette. Some of the people trapped in this saga were already famous or infamous during World War II (e.g., Benito Mussolini, Adolph Hitler, Ezra Pound, or Leni Reifenstahl), while others would become famous in due course (Willy Brandt, Werner von Braun, Sophia Loren, Henry Kissinger, Simon Wiesenthal, or Pope John Paul II). Best tells their gripping experiences with skill, and the author includes an epilogue to wrap up the loose ends and explain what happened to his protaganists after the war ended. This book will keep you turning the pages to see what happens next.

As much as I'd like to say "I'm glad this is history" and leave it at that, I can't help but notice the parallels between the destruction of Germany and the human catasrophe now unfolding in Syria. One lesson that history teaches, over and over again, is that bloody-minded fanatics care little for the welfare their own people, only for their rigid ideology.

For those interested in the end of World War II in Europe and why it ended in such a horrific Gotterdammerung for the German people, see Sir Martin Gilbert's superb The Day the War Ended: May 8, 1945 - Victory in Europe and Ian Kershaw'sThe End: The Defiance and Destruction of Hitler's Germany, 1944-1945.

Both Veteran and Neophyte Reader of the War Will Benefit From This Book
By Bill Emblom
If you consider yourself to be well-steeped in the history of World War II I don't know how much of this book you will consider to be new to you. While I don't put myself in this category I have read a few books on the war and found this book to be a beneficial learning experience for me. It is incredible to realize how much took place during the waning days of the war, and a book that focuses entirely on this time period is certainly appropriate. The death and desecration of the bodies of Mussolini and his lover followed by the suicide of Hitler in his bunker get the book off to a rousing start. The discovery of the atrocities at the Bergen Belsen concentration camp, the lewd sexual behavior taking place in Hitler's bunker prior to the Russian entrance into Berlin, plans of escape for Martin Bormann, Heinrich Himmler, Hermann Goring, and others are also included. I found it especially interesting to have included the experiences of such individuals as Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, Kurt Vonnegut, Bob Dole, Simon Wiesenthal, Aleksander Solzhenthsyn, and others included in the book.

A great deal took place in these last five days of World War II and whether or not you consider yourself well-versed in the war I believe anyone will find this to be an interesting book well worth your time.
