Rather basic

As a long-time educator and newbie teacher/librarian who will be responsible for helping other teachers integrate technology into their classrooms, I've been hunting around this summer trying to find a book to hone my skills on wikis, podcasts, blogs, RSS feeds, etc. Not just how to set them up, but how to use them in the classroom. I had hopes this book would be it. Unfortunately, it was far too basic. It explained what each of the technologies (and many others) are--just in case you didn't know--but left this reader fairly clueless as to how to actually get started. Or with any ideas how to use the technology once I WAS up and running. The book does give a PLETHORA of wonderful websites (hence the 3 stars), and provides a DVD and online web resource for practicing the technologies. Waste of Paper

This was a required text for a course on Technology in the Classroom. I realize everyone is at different levels, but this book was ridiculous. Printed in 2005 and intended for college students and teachers, it actually spent pages defining terms like "keyboard" and "word processor." I find it hard to believe that the target audience could possibly be ignorant of this information. The book was condescending and useless. I've never resented spending money on a textbook so much in my life.

Not what I expected, but I'll make it work.

I expected something a bit more helpful than this classroom textbook on the history of technology in education, and its, "oh yeah, last minute," ideas for using technology in specific classrooms. Unfortunately, I paid for this, and will have to use it, but, luckily, I didn't pay full price for it.
If you want a history of technology in education, (and in in general), this is the book for you. If not, keep looking.

Hmm. I wouldn't recommended it. Archaic and outdated content.

OK. I will probably incur the wrath of the loyal readers of this class of books and of the hardware driver developers in general (and I honestly should be really careful with this dying breed of programmers) but I will say that I was not impressed with this book at all. Here's why:

1. In despite of the fact that they still sell it in 2014, the "latest" content that the book offers was introduced in 2007 in Windows Vista. I know that the basic concepts of the Windows kernel remained intact since the old NT days, but still, there was a lot of important stuff that was introduced since the early days of Windows NT, or even Vista. Look at Windows 8 for instance and all the changes to its kernel model. Why do you think TrueCrypt people gave up developing it? So the bottom line, the advice in this book barely holds for the modern desktop OS. It's OK if you develop for Windows 2000 or XP, maybe Vista. But no further.

2. The book doesn't have a reliable code sample. Seriously! For the book on such a complex subject as kernel driver development, they did not work on a good code sample? OK, OK. It does refer to one example of the source code on a diskette!, but then they add this note, and I quote, "Note carefully that this is simply a skeleton driver that does not provide for most of the functionality typically implemented by file system drivers..." and then this, "The code has not been tested, however, and should never be used as is without major enhancement and testing efforts on your part." Great!

OK, so it refers to some "diskette" (which is funny by itself) but OK, where is it? My copy of the book did not come with it. And to the best of my knowledge there's no URL to download it from. Also that source code sample that "I shouldn't be really using," is totally useless with the warning that they pointed out above.

In the preface to the book, the authors promise an update. But where is it? It is 7 years later now and still no update!

3. The book doesn't come in a PDF or epub format as a downloadable content. I mean, just a paper book would be OK for 1997, but not today. I don't know about you, but I cannot work with just a printed content without the ability to search or digitally bookmark it. This is a big downside for a developer that can't waste 10 minutes leafing through this paper book in search for certain parameter definition.

4. The book is highly OVERPRICED for what it delivers -- basically outdated content. I'd probably pay $10 for it, just as a relic or an artifact of a bygone era.

So the bottom line, do not waste your money on this book. You'd be better off asking at Stackoverflow or even Microsoft's own TechNet forums. And if you're a novice kernel driver developer (like me) you'll be totally frustrated with this archaic book.

PS. I should point out that even though I am a novice kernel driver developer, I have an extensive experience developing for Windows and Mac since mid 90's, with a lot of experience writing code in x86 Assembler, C and C++. So I'm no newbie when it comes to coding.

This is a serious implementors' book...

... despite the jacket's attempt to suggest an appeal to a wider audience. That said, if you are an implementor hoping to create a file system on NT, it's a god-send, since other sources of information on the subject (pretty much limited to Microsoft's undocumented IFS kit and various consulting groups) come with rather lofty price tags.
I should confess that I'm writing this review because it happens to be convenient right now, even though I'm less than half-way through the book (hey, what do you want for free?). However, what I've seen so far is sufficiently polished, complete, and to all appearances authoritative that it instills a great deal of confidence, especially given the complexity of the subject. I'm less convinced that Microsoft will have the discipline to keep its 'internal' (but of course critical) interfaces stable over the course of time, but that's not the author's fault (and perhaps when they change they'll decide it's finally time to document them).

About the Author

Deborah Finkel is a Professor of Psychology at Indiana University Southeast. Her research interests include applying the methods of behavioral genetics to investigations of cognitive aging and biological markers of the aging process and the methods of longitudinal analysis to twin data to investigate genetic and environmental influences on longitudinal change. She was named a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America in 2002.

Chandra A. Reynolds is currently Professor of Psychology at the University of California Riverside. Her research interests focus on the interrelationships between health and cognition across development. She directs projects that consider the etiology of cognitive change and decline, including biological and candidate gene markers and their possible interaction with social-environmental factors. Other projects include examinations of early-life influences on longitudinal change in health, well-being, and cognition as well as longevity.

Although faith is emphasized, doctrines and dogmas are not. A place is found for both the Heavenly Father and the Earthly Mother but alone neither is regarded as "ultimate." The fellowship of believers is emphasized, but value of the Church as an institution is seriously questioned.

Dr. Jay G. Williams. Walcott-Bartlett Professor of Religious Studies at Hamilton College holds advanced degrees from Union Theological Seminary in New York (M.Div) and Columbia University (Ph.D). This is an interesting book for those interested in the possibilities of the historical entry of Christianity into China. Unlike the other books on the subject, however, this volume describes a unique text of very questionable provenence, so may not be for those that preferr more historically verifiable texts.

Taking the necessesary grain of salt, it is a facinating read.

an Amazing Book a Must read if your interested in the Christianity in china and how it evolved

I have read the Jesus Sutra by Martin Palmer as well as The Lost Sutras of Jesus by Thomas Moore I am finding it a bit odd that so far both Matthew Josiah and Thomas Moore have not read or decided not to read and include information from Jay Williams Book A Silk Road Gospel The Secret Sayings of Ye Su it is a very large oversite considering when it contains. This Book opened my mind to a spiritual possibility thay I had never considered I highly recomend this book hopefuly future writers on this subject will include information from Jay Williams book. It seems to be rather obscure which is unfortunate I would love to discuess this book with others

The Time is Now

I came into indirect knowledge of this book as of yesterday through an audio-lecture by one very reputable scholar, Dr. Stephan A. Hoeller, a proponent of Christian Gnosticism. He spoke about the author of this book as being a close personal friend of his, yet did not mention his name; rather, certain contextual clues were submitted for one to ferret-out whatever value could be obtained therein. Following the hour-long lecture, I decided to inquire further the unusual name "Ye Su/Yesu"--the author's aesthetic rendition, according to Hoeller--as referent of Jesus, and came across this book (which in 2003, at the time of said lecture, was a dust-collecting manuscript ready though not submitted for mass publication). I must inform the reader that I have not yet read the book, but the aforementioned audio-lecture which derives its material from the translated manuscript can possibly be found online, under the title "The Lost Sayings of Yesu: A Secret Gospel of Jesus". As an intermediate-scholar of Oriental religion and philosophy, and with fairly adequate knowledge of both world and comparative religions, I immediately recognized the blended influence of this clearly Christian source as having equally clear Eastern flavor (the sayings of Ye Su/Yesu/Jesus being slightly reminiscent of Zen-Buddhist koans). For any cursory glance at history in general, one will find that the east and west shared a very rich cross-cultural and trading relationship lasting an incredibly long time, thus giving meaning to the subtitle. What is also interesting is the lacking promotion of this work--interesting, but understandably so; Christianity, as is popularly espoused and touted, is a victim of its own success (not to mention a perpetrator of its own failures). I am not now, nor have been, nor will be a Christian devotee; however, this is an invaluable tome (and lecture) for anyone who has predilections for critically creative reinterpretation, esotericism, the third-level of instruction, and a distaste for mass-delusions or hypocrisies regarding majority-rules in religion.
(I rate the book on the strength of the audio-lecture which preceded its publication.)

About the Author

Ivan Nikolayevich Logachev graduated from the Kharkov Engineering Building Institute in 1962. The author of over 300 scientific papers, and more than 50 inventions and monographs, he is currently a professor at Belgorod State Technological University, Russia.

Konstantin Ivanovich Logachev graduated from the Dnepropetrovsk State University in 1992. Since 1995 he has worked at the Belgorod State Technological University. He is the author of over 150 scientific publications.

Short and sweet and to the point

Short and sweet and to the point. Ive got some DVD's and other books with the same "How" problem with those is they spend hours and hours on the why. Dont care, show me how nd lets move on. Thats what this book does, gives you some real quick basic Why and gets right to the how.

Flawlessly written, highly recommended

Review Get Your Shine On
With Get Your Shine On, Nick Wilgus continues to enthrall readers with true characters of the South. Not all of them are charming, good people, but all of them are charismatic and beautifully developed for the story.
Henry Hood and his live-in boyfriend Sam find themselves in charge of seven year old Izzy when Hen’s incredibly damaged sister Sarah leaves little Izzy home alone and skips town. Sarah has a past that is too troubled for her to be able to function as a mother, let alone to take proper care of herself. When the root of her problems is revealed the reader’s heart will break for the hopelessness of her situation. Sarah is one of society’s throwaway individuals and she is not the only victim of her past.
Izzy suffers from lack of parenting, no formal education, and possibly impaired intelligence, but what he does not suffer from is the inability to love. Sometimes Hen wants to give up on trying to raise this little boy, with no understanding of how to parent on top of poverty. His boyfriend Sam, however, realizes that he and Hen have fallen in love with Izzy and vows to create a family out of these scraps of humanity.
Hen lost his parents and although he wants to salvage his sister from her own self-destruction, without the full story of what has happened to Sarah he may not have the knowledge and tools to save her. He does love Sam with all his heart and Sam loves Hen, even when Hen tries to push Sam away. Sam may be my favorite character in this book.
The secondary characters of this story are sometimes the stars of the book. The incredibly hateful Miss Shirley stands out as a character who is unloveable as a human being. Or is she? Henry is a member of the Catholic church in the town of Vinegar Bend and one of the nuns, Sister Ascension, is determined to rescue Henry from his own feelings of worthlessness, even when the church cruelly turns its collective back on Hen.
Get Your Shine On is a book you cannot put down once you begin reading. I will warn those who may be subject to triggered flashbacks that there is reference to the rape and abuse of a child. It occurs off page and the victim is treated by the author with the respect and tenderness such horror deserves. This is a flawlessly written story that presents life with humor, wretchedness, and a heavy dose of reality.
Nick Wilgus is an author who knows and writes about the daily joys and tragedies of Southern small towns with all their flawed characters. I will read anything he writes without even looking at the blurb or cover, just because he’s that good. This book, like all of his works is highly, highly recommended.

"Get Your Shine On" captures small-town life perfectly

I really enjoyed "Get Your Shine On." It's a deeply emotional book, with heartache and redemption, all buffered by a hearty helping of laughter.

When seven-year-old Ishmael Hood's troubled mother goes out on a Saturday night and never comes back, it falls on her brother Henry to take the boy in. Henry, a barely blue-collar gay man wrestling with the aftermath of the tragic deaths of his parents, resists taking Ishy on, insisting he's not interested in parenthood. At least not yet. Henry's long-time partner, Sam, sees things differently and begins to bond with Ishy almost immediately.

As Henry wrestles to open his shuttered heart to this little boy, the small Southern town they live in shows no reluctance to expressing its feelings about the gay couple taking in a little boy. Extremely harsh and judgmental words are spoken, hammering the couple and especially Henry, but unexpected allies also show up. And just as the new little family begins to settle into comfort with each other, Ishmael's mother shows back up. Obstacles in the present and tragic ghosts from the past crowd in on the small family and it seems that the peace they've begun to build will be shattered.

Henry Hood, like Wiley Cantrell in the "Sugar Tree" books, is such an emotionally damaged character, so hammered by life but still wanting just to be able to have the things other people have - a home, a job, a family. It's hard for him to open his guarded heart, and one of the driving plots of the book is Henry's journey. While I started the book frustrated and impatient with Henry, I grew to love him as the book went on. As I said of Wiley in an earlier review, I wanted to hug Henry, then smack him upside the head, then hug him some more.

I love, especially, that one of the strongest supporters of Henry and the small family is Sister Ascension, a local nun. So often religion gets hammered in books about the struggles of gay existence, and it was refreshing that Sister Ascension was all about acceptance and love, from the start.

Reading "Get Your Shine On" was especially interesting and enlightening for me, since the fictional small town of Vinegar Bend, where Hen and Sam live, is located in Monroe County, Mississippi, where I live. Real-life places show up in slightly disguised versions. And while I didn't recognize any of the characters specifically, I had not the slightest bit of hesitation in recognizing their actions. The nosiness, the judgmentalism, but ultimately, the open-heartedness are dead-on for Southern small-town life. It made me uncomfortably aware of the kind of judgmentalism the author has probably had to put up with his entire life because of the way he was born, and I feel so bad about that.

Short review: If you loved Nick's two "Sugar Tree" books, you'll love "Get Your Shine On." The story is completely different and unrelated to the other two books, but the tone and execution of the book are similar.

moving, humorous, honest story about a man who has to suddenly take care of his young nephew

Wow, this is a really great book! It is a moving, humorous, honest story about a man who has to suddenly take care of his young nephew, and how they eventually become a family, along with the man's long-time boyfriend. Unique, realistic, funny, emotional, very well-written. Great sense of place (set in a small town in the South). I loved the relationships between the little boy and his two uncles, and their relationship between each other. Highly recommended.
